Picture this: You’ve spent countless hours working hard on your research. You’ve gathered your data, analyzed everything twice, discussed your work with your colleagues. Now you’re about to sabotage your treasured text for good. How? By writing an ineffective and boring abstract.
Abstracts should not be an afterthought, but a teaser. Your abstract should tell your readers everything they need to know, and make them read on to learn about your research in greater detail. In this workshop, we’ll work with effective abstracts and analyze them for important rhetorical moves. This strategy will improve your own writing and help you spread the word.
Using abstracts, I’ll try to change your mind about writing. Many people stress about it, because they focus too much on the final product - the submitted (and hopefully published) text. Changing our perspective and understanding writing as a process will help you create a healthier relationship with writing. In practice, this means revisiting and rewriting your texts. After all, good writing is rewriting.
The seminar will be held by Martin Sedláček, who is a lecturer at the Center of Academic Writing at the Czech Academy of Sciences.
The event is organized via the platform FIT & SMART STUDENT.
