Writing for Publication 3: Style

This workshop is a third part of a cycle of the courses Writing for Publication which focuses on a style. Passing the first two courses is not required because every seminar has its topic. In this workshop, you will learn how to make your academic writing dynamic, clear, and reader-friendly.

Do you sometimes find yourself reading an academic text with ease, following the writer’s train of thought from one point to the next? Does the text seem clear and logical? On the other hand, are you sometimes frustrated when reading a text that is confusing, with the meaning hidden in vague, wordy phrases and poorly constructed sentences? Too often writers believe that ‘academic writing’ involves complex language and flowery style. In this workshop, you will learn how to make your academic writing dynamic, clear and reader-friendly. This will be done by analysing sample texts and engaging in activities to illustrate the principles of writing logical, coherent research articles.

Time & Place: 10th June, 9.00 - 12.00, Malá aula in Karolinum

Lecturer: Eleanor Lurring, MA in Applied Linguistics, MBA, RSA Dip TESOL

I am a native speaker of English from the UK. With over thirty years of experience teaching high-level English, I now focus on helping writers produce academic texts for publication. I proofread and edit academic texts such as research articles, Ph.D. dissertations, conference papers, motivation letters, and grant applications. I work with doctoral and post-doctoral researchers in various branches of science, education, engineering, humanities, and economics. This may be consultancy work if the structure and content of a text need attention; or it may be proofreading for accuracy and reader-friendly style.

Participants: Ph.D. students and postdocs
