Academic Leadership

The academic environment has been changing together with the requirements of students' skills. Nowadays, one of the requirements is connected with academic leadership; it is expected that Ph.D. students will also take the lead. Demands on bureaucracy and management skills are increasing but it could be complicated to coordinate them with other academic obligations. In addition, leadership in the academic field has its specifics: academic employees appreciate autonomy, self-management, or equal collaboration. What methods can be used to achieve effective academic leadership?

Learning outcomes:

a) To learn what is the difference between a leader, a manager, and a follower and what are the typical methods of work organization (e.g. what is the difference between management and leadership).

b) To learn specifics of a leading role in the academic environment (e.g. heads of departments) and requirements on the academic leaders.

c) To learn diverse concepts of leadership (reflexive leadership, leadership in Social Identity Theory) and compare them with your own concept.

d) To arrange or adjust your own strategy of leadership.

The course is divided into two parts. The first was held online in November, and it contained more theory. The video has been uploaded on the Charles University stream. You can watch it anytime from 15th November (https://stream.cuni.cz/cs/Detail/15453). The second is taking place in Zelená posluchárna on 7th December which is arranged as a workshop. In the workshop, you can apply knowledge from the first part into practice.

Timing: The workshop is taking place on 7th December from 9.30 to 13.30 in Zelená posluchárna.
