How does psychological counselling work?

How do I choose a counsellor?

When selecting a counsellor, it is more important to find someone with whom you feel personally at ease than to focus solely on the specific topic you wish to address. A strong, comfortable working relationship is essential for effective support.

If you feel that a particular counsellor is not the right fit for you, it is possible to request a change.

(Please note that it is not permitted to attend sessions with more than one counsellor at the same time.)

To request a change of counsellor, please contact us at counsel@ruk.cuni.cz.

Topic/Contract: Psychological counselling is not limited by topic, it can be related to both study/work issues and personal life. At the initial session there is space to share your expectations and set up the collaboration.

Session lenght: One session usually lasts 50 minutes but may vary from counsellor to counsellor.

Number of sesions: The counselling service is intended as a short-term support. The consultations are not intended to replace long-term therapy. The number of sessions and their frequency depends on the agreement with the counsellor and can be adjusted during the cooperation based on the evaluation of the current situation.

Psychological counselling is provided both in person and online. For foreign students also in English.

What does the counseling process involve?

The psychologists providing counselling support approach each situation with respect for the individual personality and needs of the client. They do not offer quick, universal solutions; rather, they act as guides in the process.

The goal of counselling is to help clients better understand their situation, identify internal and external resources they can draw on, and support them in taking an active role in finding solutions that align with their own choices and values.
