The theatre was founded in 2000 by producer Michal Hrubý as an independent theatre and art company whose main focus is the production of its own theatre projects. Since 2004, the theatre has been the organizer of the popular theatre show Metropolitan Summer of Actors. In 2018, the home stage in Fénix Palace on Wenceslas Square was also joined by the Small Stage at Na Perštýně 6, Prague 1.

Although it is not a theatre with a permanent troop, a team of collaborators naturally formed over time. These include M. Absolonová, Z. Adamovská, P. Hartl, K. Hádek, E. Holubová, I. Chýlková, B. Klepl, E. Balzerová, J. Cina, J. Krausová, or K. Roden. In more than 20 years of its existence, Studio DVA has presented over sixty of its own productions.
