In this workshop, you will learn how readers understand and respond to your academic writing and how to make effective use of feedback. A fresh pair of eyes can reveal whether your ideas are communicated clearly and logically, even to readers outside your field of study.
The Doctoral Peer Club is not focused on language correction or judging the quality of your writing. Instead, it helps you understand how readers interpret your text and identify opportunities to improve its structure, clarity, and overall readability. The workshop takes place in a supportive small-group environment facilitated by an experienced academic writing instructor.
The course is offered in two sessions, each focusing on a different part of an academic paper. You can participate in each session separately.
Introduction of an academic text (November 9th)
Title and abstract of an academic text (December 10th)
Content
Working in small groups, participants read each other's texts (from the work abstract) and provide feedback on structure, content, clarity, and organisation. As an author, you decide which aspects of your text you would like feedback on. The facilitator will oversee the discussions and contribute feedback alongside your peers.
Requirements
Bring a recognisable section of your academic text (dissertation, research article, etc.), 1-2 pages in length. The text content must be related to the title or/and the abstract of your work.
To receive feedback from the facilitator, send your text via email ( ) or upload it to the Educational Portal no later than
December 6th. To receive feedback from the facilitator, your text must be submitted at least three days before the workshop.
Bring three printed copies of your text.
Please arrive on time and come prepared to participate actively.
Instructor
Eleanor Lurring, MBA, MA Applied Linguistics and TESOL, UK accredited proofreader
Eleanor is a native English speaker from the UK. With over thirty years of experience teaching high-level English, she now focuses on helping writers produce academic texts for publication. Eleanor proofreads and edits academic texts such as research articles, PhD dissertations, conference papers, motivation letters, and grant applications.
