German for Academic Study Abroad

Are you going to study in a German-speaking country? Do you have doubts about your vocabulary, or are you perhaps worried about your uncoherent expression? Would you like to improve your vocabulary, communication skills, or just to get talking before you leave? Join our course German for Academic Study Abroad!

The course comprising of 6 meetings is intended for all Ph.D. students and postdocs who have learned German in the past (their language level is at least B1), and they are going to leave for Germany or Austria. It also contains facts about the countries and hot issues. The course takes place online, so even the students currently studying abroad can join.

The course is not intended for beginners! The lecture will be delivered mainly in German!

Structure of the course

 1st meeting

- Topics: Grundgesetz und Verfassungsprinzipien; Aufgaben des Staates und Pflichten der Bürger

- Vocabulary: Stadt, Kreis, Bundesland; Verwaltung und Amt

- Aktuell: „Ilira über Sex, Tindern und Toleranz in Deutschland“

 2nd. meeting

- Topics: Verfassungsorgane und Parteien; Gesellschaftliche Teilhabe und politische Beteiligung

- Vocabulary: Parteien und politisches Leben; Recht und Gesetz; Gesellschaftliche Gruppen 1+2

- Aktuell: „Moe Phoenix über muslimische Ehen, die Flucht seiner Eltern und deutsche Gesetze“

 3rd meeting

- Topics: Geschichte und Verantwortung: der Nationalsozialismus und seine Folgen; Deutsche Geschichte von der Teilung bis zur Wiedervereinigung

- Vocabulary: soziale Beziehungen; Leute charakterisieren; Liebe und Partnerschaft

- Aktuell: „Weekend über Gesellschaftsschichten, soziale Arbeit und Gelsenkirchener Mentalität“

 4th meeting

- Topics: Europäische Integration

- Vocabulary: Europa und die Europäische Union; Internationale Organisationen; Beziehungen zwischen Staaten; Weltall und Raumfahrt; Die Meinung sagen, Sagen und Sprechen 1+2

- Aktuell: „Marvin Game über Nationalstolz, seinen Kiez und Familie“

 5th meeting

- Topics: Rollenverständnis von Frau und Mann; Erziehung und Bildung

- Vocabulary: Im Klassenzimmer; Unterrichtssprache; Sprachen lernen; Ausbildung und Schule; Studium und Prüfungen; Berufsausbildung

- Aktuell: „Mef You über das Lehrer-Dasein, Kriminalität und seine zweite Chance“

 6th meeting

- Topics: Toleranz und Zusammenleben; Religiöse Vielfalt

- Vocabulary: Literatur, Film, Kunst; Feste und Feiern; Kirchen und Religionen

- Aktuell: „Pati Valpati über Vorurteile, Kindheit und litauische Wurzeln“

Timing: Wednesdays from 30th March - 4th May (6 meetings), 17.00 - 18.30, MS Teams

Lecturer: PhDr. Karel Mika from the Language Centre of the Faculty of Arts at CU has been teaching German as a foreign language since the year 2009. He has gained valuable experience as a teacher of German at secondary schools. He is engaged in helping students to pass their exams and achieve language certificates. His efforts are focused on overcoming barriers in communication in German and taking worries out. He has been working at the Language Centre since the year 2020.
