Academic Writing 1: Writing summaries without plagiarizing

We are pleased to invite all our international Bachelor's and Master's students to join a series of seminars focusing on academic writing. During our first session, we will learn how to create a strong, effective summary.

An effective summary of previous research is indispensable to any scientific paper. In this key section, we map what has and hasn't been done before and use it to identify gaps in knowledge that we address in our research. The nature of the task demands treating previous research ethically. While plagiarism in its purest form is a matter of choice, we are often guilty of "patchwriting" or following the source text too closely without citing it properly. Although patchwriting is often unintentional, it is considered unethical and may cause problems both to us and to the authors of the cited text. In this seminar, we are going to practice writing summaries effectively - and, most importantly - without plagiarizing. You will learn what makes a strong, effective summary and strategies for writing your own texts.

The seminar will be held by Martin Sedláček, who is a lecturer at the Center of Academic Writing at the Czech Academy of Sciences.

The event is organized via the platform FIT & SMART STUDENT.
