"Why Are They So Weird?": Cultural Communication with International Students with Special Needs

This workshop is designed for university staff who work with international students, including those with special needs. It equips participants with practical tools to recognise and mitigate conflicts arising from cultural misunderstandings, and to communicate effectively with students whose behaviour may reflect cultural background, special needs, or both. Participants will explore the stages of cultural adaptation and gain insight into the emotional, social, and academic challenges students may face at each stage — challenges that can be significantly amplified for those with additional needs. The workshop addresses common issues such as cultural fatigue, misunderstandings, communication barriers, and uncertainty about social norms. Through interactive activities and real-life examples, participants will strengthen their intercultural sensitivity, inclusive practice, and confidence in supporting every international student.

The workshop will be held in English and led by experienced tutors Milada Ševčíková and Caleb Daniel House. The final hour of the three-hour session is optional and dedicated to open discussion, so participants are not required to attend the full duration.
